a reflection on 2013

This was a foolish year to start blogging regularly. Everyone is talking about the end of language and the advent of the image. This is a good time to be a photographer or a filmmaker. Not the right time to be a writer.

But language distinguishes us. Even an animal can respond to what it sees. We are unique in our ability to interpret the world through language, and in our ability to share that interpretation through language. So I started writing a few months ago. A bunch of you have joined the project, too. You've subscribed and you've responded via email and you've commented and you've shared these posts with your friends.

Some of you offer 'likes' on the posts. Here are your favorites from this year:

My personal favorites were these two:

And my favorite comment was from my brother, responding to "In Which I mistake Control for Love". He texted me and said, "sh*t just got real."

THAT is what I'm aiming for here.

We're just getting started. I hope you all are ready your for more. My white board is full of ideas for 2014 and I'm excited to share them with you. If the writing moves you or shapes you or helps you in some way, I hope you'll share it with others. If you're just checking things out, subscribing via email is the best way to stay connected.

I believe better stories are told when we ask better questions, and we'll be diving deep into those questions in the year ahead. I'm really grateful for all of you who are joining me for this exploration.
